What Is Jaw Surgery?

Jaw surgery is a treatment method applied to patients with jaw structure disorders, not only to improve their aesthetic appearance but also to treat chewing and speech problems.

During the treatment process, jaw surgery specialists and orthodontists work together.

Conditions such as the lower or upper jaw being positioned too far forward or backward, asymmetries in the placement of the upper and lower jaws, and similar problems can be treated with jaw surgery. Situations that fall within the scope of jaw surgery and can be treated with surgical procedures include:

  • Extraction of impacted or complicated teeth
  • Lesions of dental origin that form within the bones
  • Cleft lip and palate
  • Implant applications for missing teeth
  • Cysts or tumor formations in the jaw
  • Soft and hard tissue reconstruction before prosthetic procedures
  • Facial and jaw fractures
  • Salivary gland disorders
  • Aesthetic or functional deformities in the mouth, face, or jaw area
  • Bone necrosis in the jaw caused by cancer treatments

To identify the problems, X-rays or tomography are taken, and then a suitable treatment plan is prepared according to the patient’s condition.

How Is Jaw Surgery Performed?

In cases of dental irregularities or bite defects, orthodontic treatment is applied before surgery. During this period, braces treatment helps align the teeth properly while preparing the jaw for the surgical procedure. Afterwards, the jaw surgery process is planned by the surgeon and plastic surgeons. Unlike other oral and dental health treatments, jaw surgery is performed under general anesthesia, so patients do not feel any pain or discomfort.

Since the teeth and bone structures of children between the ages of 11 and 15 have not yet fully developed, problems can often be solved with orthodontic treatment. However, for problems that arise after the age of 18, jaw surgery may be required.
