Tooth loss or aesthetic problems can be resolved through various crown methods. Dental crowns greatly help in addressing functional issues. Of course, in addition to restoring functionality, achieving an aesthetic appearance is also important. For this reason, zirconium crowns are the most commonly preferred method.

What is Zirconium Dental Crown?

Zirconium is a white alloy that is preferred instead of gray metal supports used during bridge or prosthesis procedures. It is both durable and has a natural appearance.

The main reason it is most preferred is that its appearance cannot be distinguished from a natural tooth.

Zirconium crowns make oral and dental functions much more practical, and there are two different methods: metal-supported and metal-free. Situations where zirconium crowns may be necessary include:

  • Noticeable gaps between the teeth,
  • Permanent discolorations in the teeth that cannot be corrected with whitening treatments,
  • Repair of broken and decayed teeth,
  • Replacement of missing teeth,
  • Correction of unsightly appearances caused by gum recession.

Since zirconium crowns are as hard as the natural tooth structure, they can also be applied to molars, where chewing takes place.

How is Zirconium Crown Applied?

Before the zirconium crown procedure—which has become one of the most frequently chosen methods in recent years—the damage to the tooth is identified, and after consultation with the patient, the decision for zirconium crowns is made. The steps followed during the procedure are:

  • Under local anesthesia, the teeth to be crowned are thinned so that the crown does not appear bulky and properly fits the oral structure.
  • The oral cavity is cleaned and disinfected.
  • Impressions of the tooth/teeth to be treated are taken.
  • A temporary crown may be placed until the zirconium crowns are ready.
  • The preparation of zirconium crowns takes approximately 1 week.
  • Once ready, the zirconium crowns are fitted to the patient’s teeth and made permanent.

A follow-up dental check-up may be required within 7 to 10 days after the crown placement to ensure everything is in good condition. With proper oral and dental care, zirconium crowns can last for many years.

What Are the Advantages of Zirconium Crowns?

Zirconium crowns not only address functional problems of the teeth but also help achieve an aesthetic appearance. The main advantages of zirconium crowns are:

  • No dark coloration occurs on the gums,
  • Thanks to their light-reflecting property, they are indistinguishable from natural teeth,
  • With proper care, they offer long-lasting use,
  • They are compatible with the gums, helping to maintain gum health,
  • No sensitivity to hot or cold occurs,
  • Tooth staining or yellowing is minimized,
  • They help prevent bad breath.

Today, zirconium crowns are one of the most commonly used crown methods and can be used for many years. However, it is important to visit the dentist regularly both to monitor the condition of the crowns and to maintain overall oral and dental health.
