One of the main goals of dentistry is to preserve the mouth in its natural state; however, in some cases, tooth extraction may be necessary. In particular, teeth that cannot be treated should be removed to prevent them from posing a threat to oral health.
In general, although tooth extraction is often feared, it does not cause any pain since it is performed under local anesthesia by specialist dentists and oral surgeons. After the extraction, if necessary, the empty space can be restored with various bridge or filling applications.
In Which Situations Is Tooth Extraction Performed?
Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the mouth and, in some cases, it is a necessary procedure to protect overall oral health. Cavities and oral infections that are not treated in time can progress and make the tooth irreparable. In such cases, extraction may be required to prevent the infection from spreading to healthy teeth.
Common dental traumas and deep cavities are among the main reasons for tooth extraction. If a tooth is severely damaged and cannot be saved by any other method, extraction becomes necessary. In addition, wisdom teeth that fail to erupt properly and negatively affect oral comfort may also need to be removed in some cases.
Other situations requiring tooth extraction include:
- When cavities or fractures in the tooth cannot be restored with treatments such as root canal therapy, fillings, or crowns.
- When gum disease progresses to a stage that damages surrounding tissues.
- When orthodontic treatment requires creating extra space in the mouth.
- When certain medications used in treatments like chemotherapy or organ transplantation weaken the immune system, some teeth may need to be removed to prevent dental infections.
How Is Tooth Extraction Performed?
Before tooth extraction, local anesthesia is administered to numb the area and prevent oral sensitivity. In procedures that require deeper intervention, such as wisdom tooth extraction, a higher amount of anesthesia may be applied. Afterward, the gum and bone tissue are incised. Using appropriate instruments, the tooth is gently loosened back and forth and separated from the jawbone and ligaments that hold it in place. In some cases, the tooth may be removed in one piece, while in others, a sectional extraction may be necessary.
Following the extraction, bleeding and clot formation occur in the area. A gauze pad is placed to control the bleeding, and dissolvable stitches may be applied to the edges of the gums.
After Tooth Extraction
Medications that prevent infection and pain may be prescribed following a tooth extraction.
Typically, an antibiotic is applied to the extraction site to prevent infection, and patients are also advised to take oral medication as directed.
Healing inside the mouth is usually completed within a few days, and during this period, there are several important points to reduce sensitivity:
- The prescribed medications recommended by the dentist should be taken regularly.
- To reduce bleeding and accelerate clot formation, a firm gauze pad should be placed immediately after the procedure. The gauze should be replaced at regular intervals.
- During the first 24 hours after extraction, special attention should be paid to the type of food consumed. Soft foods such as soup, puree, or pudding should be preferred. Transitioning to solid foods should wait 1–2 days until healing progresses.
- Smoking should be avoided to accelerate the healing process.
- While sleeping, the head should be supported with a pillow and kept elevated.
- The mouth should not be rinsed vigorously, and excessive force should not be applied to the area. Brushing teeth harshly should be avoided.
Complete healing usually takes about 1–2 weeks. During this time, oral sensitivity and pain gradually decrease and disappear. However, in cases of prolonged or persistent pain or bleeding, a dentist should be consulted without delay.
