In the past, black fillings were commonly applied to teeth, which caused an unpleasant appearance, especially in the front teeth. However, today, thanks to aesthetic dental fillings, this procedure can be performed while preserving the natural and aesthetic structure of the teeth.

What Is Aesthetic Dental Filling and Why Is It Applied?

Aesthetic dental filling is essentially a procedure performed to restore the loss of tooth tissues. This treatment is carried out using composite fillings, which are adjusted to match the patient’s tooth color, ensuring a natural appearance. In some cases, bonding filling materials may also be used instead of composite. The purposes of aesthetic fillings include:

  • Correcting permanent discoloration in teeth,
  • Repairing fractured or missing teeth caused by trauma or cavities,
  • Designing a personalized smile by reshaping the teeth,
  • Lengthening tooth size or closing gaps between teeth.

This way, a customized smile design is achieved. Patients feel much better by getting rid of undesirable appearances and regain their self-confidence.

How Is Aesthetic Dental Filling Applied?

First, tissue and tooth samples are taken from the patient to prepare filling material suitable for the patient’s teeth. The steps are as follows:

  • Local anesthesia is administered,
  • The prepared composite filling is applied in layers into the cavities created on the tooth,
  • The filling material is hardened under halogen light and chemically bonded to the tooth,
  • Polishing is performed if necessary.

While composite filling is ideal for less visible teeth, porcelain fillings may be preferred for front teeth. Depending on the treated area and number of teeth, the procedure takes between 15 minutes and 1 hour.

What Are the Advantages of Aesthetic Dental Filling?

The biggest advantage of aesthetic dental fillings is that they provide a beautiful and natural look without differing from the natural tooth color.

Apart from fixing functional issues, they are also used to solve cosmetic problems. Other advantages include:

  • Fillings are indistinguishable from natural teeth,
  • No allergic reactions occur in patients,
  • Teeth gain a natural and aesthetic appearance,
  • Suitable for patients of all ages unless contraindicated,
  • No sensitivity to hot or cold food and drinks,
  • Compatible with oral tissues,
  • Long-lasting and functional with no issues.

If performed correctly by an experienced and skilled dentist, aesthetic dental fillings will not fall out even when eating hard foods. Similarly, with proper oral and dental care, their lifespan ranges from 5 to 10 years at minimum.
